Сьогодні, 14 жовтня, Україна святкує День захисника та День Українсь Крім того, віряни також відзначають День святої Покрови Пресвятої Богородиці. Християни східного обряду 14 жовтня відзначають одне з найбільш шанованих свят — Покрова Пресвятої Богородиці.
За легендою, у цей день військо давніх русів на чолі з Аскольдом взяло в облогу Константинополь. Жителі міста в гарячій молитві звернулись до Богородиці з проханням про порятунок. Богородиця з'явилася перед людьми та вкрила їх своїм покровом, зробивши невидимими для ворога. Як вказують деякі джерела, вражений Аскольд та його дружинники прийняли хрещення та стали християнами. В українських селах до цих пір дотримуються давньої народної традиції грати весілля після Покрови.
До Покрови завершувався період сватання і приготування до весіль, який починався після першої Пречистої. У Карпатській Україні до Покрови поверталися всі пастуші отари з полонин і завершували останню мандрівку чумаки. Для того, щоб усі члени сім'ї були здоровими, на Покрову старша господиня брала вишитого рушника, що був над іконою Богородиці, і розвішувала його над вхідними дверима. Сімейні пари можуть прийти на свято до храму, для того щоб також помолитися про милосердя та заступництво Матері Божої. З року свято Покрови в Україні відзначається як День українського козацтва.
